No disruption as Univeyor works over Christmas to meet deadline

When global specialty chemicals company Clariant wanted a new UK warehousing system installed within a two-week window, Univeyor was up for the challenge. Clariant’s warehouse in Leeds is more than 15 years old and was badly in need of an upgrade.

Univeyor was brought in to replace the old AGV system with a more modern conveyor system and was tasked to complete the installation between the site’s shutdown for Christmas, on 20th December, and its reopening date of 3rd January.

The new system includes a transfer car, servicing in-feed and out-feed conveyors on all six existing cranes. Laser positioning tells the transfer car its location and it is controlled by a profibus node, which communicates via an optical link. The system has also introduced new goods-in and goods-out spurs, both accumulating chain conveyors, and a pair of manual pick stations. Control of the existing crane conveyors from the old AGV system has also been taken over by the new system.

David Gunton, Clariant’s UK Regional Engineering Manager, says of the installation:
We were under signifi-cant time pressure on this job and we were impressed by Univeyor’s ability to complete the mechanical installation by Christmas Day and the electrical commissio-ning by 2nd January. This enabled us to be ready for full production on 3rd January - with
no disruption to our business.
